The cell shrinkage accompanying the spontaneous activity of immature cochlear inner supporting cell (ISC) is prompted by Cl− efflux via Ca2+-activated Cl− channel TMEM16A and osmotic water secretion. NKCC1 transiently expressed in the immature ISCs helps refilling of Cl- and K+, which leads regaining of original cell volume and preparing ISCs for subsequent spontaneous activity.
